MV Princess Victoria

We recently received an enquiry via our website from the great grandson of a crew member (possibly Captain) of the MV Victoria, which sank in the Humber in 1940, asking if we had any information about the ship and its location. Unfortunately, I have been unable to reply to the enquiry because the email address given doesn't seem to work. I'm posting here and on Facebook in the hope that it finds the person who made the enquiry.

I found quite a bit of information about the MV/HMS Princess Victoria, including personal accounts from other descendants of crew members, on wrecksite.eu  - a fantastic source of information about historic wrecks.

Princess Victoria was built in 19
39 as the first stern loading car ferry for the London Midland & Scottish Railway Co. and was used on the Stranraer to Larne route. Engines by Wm Denny & Sulzer diesels, 21 knots (Sulzer constructed the port engine in Winterthur, whilst Denny constructed the starboard in Dumbarton). She was taken over by the Admiralty as an auxiliary minelayer. On the 19th May 1940 she struck a mine off the entrance to the Humber and sank quickly. Captain J.B.E. Hall, three officers and 32 ratings were killed. See HMS Princess Victoria on wrecksite.eu for further information.

Hi there,
I am also very interested in this vessel. Do you know if it's possible to dive this, or know anyone that has? I think it's very close to a shipping lane.

Thanks

Tom the wreck is on our local neighbourhood just off the Copeland. It is as you say near shipping lanes. It is also lying in 90+m, very dark with currents running at 3knts+. Good ocean diver training ground 😁 we Dive Belfast Lough all the time and even on a good day viz on our deepest home wreck at 43m can be challenging. Planning a Dive on this?

Hi Richard,
Ahh right, I see. No I am not a technical diver I'm afraid so 90m is far too deep.
The reason I am interested in this wreck and wanted to dive it was because by Great Uncle died on this when it hit the mine. He was found washed up on the beach in Norfolk I think

My grandfather also died when she went down. As it is 80 years next year, would it be possible to be taken to the site and respect him and the other members of the crew that perished.
I don't dive but you know where the wreck is and can get there.
Thanks regards Hugh Murray

This thread is confusing two different boats that sank…the first MV Princess Victoria (1939) was the first British stern-loading cross-channel car ferry. After two months it was requisitioned by the Admiralty and converted to a Minelayer. It was sunk by a mine on 19 May in1940 at the mouth of Humber Estuary, and 36 crew lost their lives… the second MV Princess Victoria was a car ferry that sailed between Stranraer in Scotland and Larne in Northern Ireland. On 30th Jan 1953 she sank in a storm off the coast of Donagahdee, near the Copeland Islands, in horrendous conditions… over 130 passengers and crew died. The Sir Samuel Kelly lifeboat crew from Donaghadee managed to rescue 44 (all women and children perished sadly as their lifeboat smashed against the ferry’s hull).
Hope that helps clear up which boat was which.
